Clothes form an important part of who we are irrespective of whether we wear expensive designer wear or just ordinary clothes. The clothes we wear today are part of the creative work done by some exceptionally talented people without whom we would still be wearing what our ancestors had worn way back. This makes fashion industry a significant part of our society.
The role of fashion
As we all know, change is the only thing that is permanent over the years and it is true in the fashion industry too. We have seen vast changes happening in all other fields due to the technological advancements that are continuously evolving.
The fashion industry too has undergone several sophisticated changes in both fashion style and the way the industry functions. We get all kinds of dresses designed from clothing that cover the whole body to skimpy dresses that provide the bare minimal coverage. All these are part of the changes the industry has undergone and the creativity that is in abundance here.
In spite of being much commercialized the industry has been striving to help us be clothed properly while at the same time manage to look stylish and in line with the latest trends.
Fashion is one of the most glamorous industries and one, which also ranks high in the most favored list among the various industries. Nevertheless, it is also one of the most underrated. While fashion industry has almost all individuals as its direct customers, as they frequent either the retail cloth shop or the vintage ones, people still look at those in the fashion industry as shallow hobbyists. Whatever opinion people have about those in the fashion industry or the industry as a whole, they still don’t stop buying from the industry.
Inspiration is defined as a better and new way of solving or answering an issue. In our daily life, we are constantly occupied with our work or daily routine that there is hardly any room to think fresh or come up with the perfect and insightful solution for a difficult issue. Here are some practical tips that will help you, when you are in need of creativity and inspiration. You can use any one or even a combination of the ideas below to help you.
Change your perspective
Most often, it is our own fixation to a particular pattern, which wreaks havoc with our creativity and inspiration. When you are faced with an issue, you should not dwell on what you can’t do, don’t know or unable to do, which only will fuel the negativity inside you and keep you from moving forward. These are closed statements, which discourage and set you back.
Instead, think of open ended phrases or questions like, I can, I will, I have and there is always a solution. When you have a positive outlook, the situation would not seem so daunting and you will actually find the answers, which you were not able to come up with before. This positive attitude helps to let the solutions and inspirations flow naturally.
Break away from mediocrity
This is the second and most effective way to be inspired. Think and take action, which is innovative and out of box. Try to do things for a day that you would not normally do. Alternatively, at least adhere to this for a couple of hours. It can be deviation from the music you listen to normally or taking a new route to your office or trying unusual foods. When you try to break away from the mold, you will be exposed to new experiences and start seeing the world in a different perspective. This also helps in widening your perspective and boosting your creativity.
We possess within us the capacity to do things beyond our imagination because of the power we are endowed with. The human brain has been found to have various functions and operations, but still many things are present which we are not aware of, about the power our mind is endowed with. The visualization exercises help to improve your mind power and help you achieve greater things in life.
Before we move on to the exercises let us see what visualization means. It is a skill, which helps you to imagine things and improve your brainpower as a result. Visualization involves imagination and creativity. When you improve your visualization, you can also boost your imagination and creativity. The skill is needed for mind expansion and successful hypnosis, which once mastered can help you achieve greater things in life effortlessly. Without the right visualization, you cannot move forward in life and accomplish your goals successfully.
Here are some basic exercises:
When it comes to creating designs for clothes, the number of places where you can find inspiration is only as limited as you allow it to be. Some designers like to look at the designs created by others and then change them a little, or simply copy them completely, though that second option can lead to a lot of trouble – plagiarism charges, fines, imprisonment or worse. Considering this, it’s a much better idea to come up with ideas of your own, or if you do find a source you’d like to replicate on fabric, to significantly change the design you make, so it doesn’t look just like the original.
Sourcing designs isn’t easy, even if you have a lot of experience doing it. But being able to pull ideas and concepts from the world surrounding you is important to becoming a good designer, so it’s something every designer should probably learn to do at some point if they want to be successful. For instance, sometimes I like to look at old musical instruments, like pianos, which often featured elegant designs, carvings, woodwork and other features. Some of these instruments still look beautiful despite their great age, and I think it’s every designer’s dream to come up with something that has lasting appeal.
There are other places besides clothing where you might be able to find interesting designs you can implement into garments. I sometimes look to architecture as well, for effective use of colors, windows, lighting and the like. This one is kind of hard to explain since you don’t really see people walking around dressed up like buildings or anything. It’s just, at least to me anyhow, it’s about finding things that are pleasing to the eye and then converting them to clothing, to make garments which are equally pleasant for people to look at.
Now I can’t go giving all my secrets away, but I think I’ve still done a good job of showing various resources designers have – resources they may not even realize exist because they are too focused on popular clothing crafted by other designers. I guess more than anything, I’m trying to explain the importance of perspective here. The way we look at the world around us has a lot to do with what it is we see there, exactly. Learning how to view things properly as a designer is a major step away from the amateur and towards the professional.
Well, that’s about it, except for that piano bit. When life becomes stressful, and this is pretty much an inevitable occurrence for all of us, it can really help to get away from those stressors for a while. Doing something a bit lighter and easier on the body and mind is kind of taking a break after working for many hours on your feet, or doing something physically demanding. Playing with one of these for a while has certainly helped to relax me in the past, leaving my mind refreshed and ready to try approaching a difficult problem from angles I hadn’t considered before. It’s not guaranteed, but every bit helps.
Today, I want to talk about something you may have considered yourself, in the past. People are violent. I understand there’s a certain level of violence which is kind of necessary to life; killing animals for meat, harvesting crops for produce, fighting off someone who would try to get you to do something by using violence himself. Violence is a necessity, I think. But some people sure do seem to enjoy it more than others. Really, we are the only animals on this planet that kill for reasons besides hunger or safety. We hunt game as a hobby, killing just for the fun of it.
That’s not even the worst of it if you ask me. I understand the need for some people to learn how to track animals, to kill them and drag them back home for food, for making products, for a number of purposes. But for the life of me, I’ll never understand catch and release fishing. At least when a hunter shoots a deer, the deer dies. You don’t put holes in these animals and then release them back into the wild severely injured, right? This seems especially violent and senseless and I don’t think I’ll ever really get why people do it.
On the other hand, fishing for food is something I understand completely. With something like this and a decent rod, spear, gun or bow, you could catch enough fish or other animals that you would never go hungry again. Depending on your specific tastes, one type of game is going to eat better than others. The only problem with this is the various hunting and fishing seasons which disallow bringing back specific types of game during periods where it is ok to hunt or fish the other types. It’s a lot of stuff to learn, unless you plan on just going off and poaching, which is highly illegal.
Since I mentioned rangefinders, they’re actually very useful devices and not just for hunting and fishing either. They’re perfect for measuring distances between the user and a given point, making them kind of like advanced binoculars which do a lot more than just let the user see something from far away. You can use them for golfing, watching birds, construction and a number of other tasks, so they’re pretty versatile. Most hunters, fishers and other people who are regularly trying to hit targets from a good distance away will probably want to own one of these devices.
That doesn’t really do anything to change the brutality of hunting though – it just makes it easier to brutalize more often. Now, I’m not saying humans are the only animals that understand cruelty. If you’ve ever seen a common housecat that’s caught a mouse, a bird or some other smaller animal, they can be pretty wicked without any help from an owner. For the most part though, animals just aren’t as violent as people, or if they are, it’s for different reasons than to simply curb boredom for a time.
Designing clothes was something I wanted to do as far back as I can remember, and I’m happy I was able to land a career in fashion design where I would be able to do this thing I always wanted to do, every day. Some designers will tell you that making clothes is all about the fabric being used, or the cut of a garment, or the design itself. I’ll concede that these are all important aspects of creating unique and interesting clothing, but I don’t think anything is as important to the lasting appeal in an article of clothing as the stitching. That is always an excellent indicator of the quality of an item.
Like knots, different types of stitches are better for different purposes; one stitch which is an excellent choice for a specific job could be useless for another. The straight stitch or basting stitch as some call it is a simple line which loops through the front and back of whatever material you’re working with. This is simple and fast, and usually the first type of stitch one learns to make when they first start sewing. It isn’t exactly durable though. One way to make it last longer is to double stitch, which is basically the same type of stitch but uses twice as much thread to make a stronger stitch.
The zigzag is another good stitch to use if you want something which will hold together through regular stress or strain. You could make this stitch by hand, or with the right sewing machine or serger if it’s able to make multiple kinds of stitches. The zigzag looks like small V shapes stacked on top of one another and made into a line. There is also a three step zigzag which is a variant of this, but it doesn’t really look much different or offer a significant improvement in durability over the zigzag.
Speaking of sergers, machines like the Brother 2430 CV are far superior to your standard sewing machines. They’re able to work different threads simultaneously and allow for creating unique designs or getting much more work done with the same amount of time spent sewing. I’d recommend one of these machines to someone who is experienced with sewing, but due to their advanced nature over more simple machines it would probably be better to start off with something else if you are new to the hobby.
Depending on what it is you’re trying to sew, you’ll want to use a specific stitch for the job. Directly sewing a tear in a garment would use a different stitch than sealing the same hole by applying a patch and sewing it in place over the tear, for example. You can usually find the best stitch for your specific project by searching online, but do keep in mind that opinions play a huge part in this. Even if one source says a certain stitch would work best, that’s not exactly proof of the fact. Remain open to trying different stitches and you’ll learn for yourself which work best for what.
The way you get around says a lot about you. Just like the clothes you’re wearing (right down to their color even) can have an effect on the way people perceive you, your mode of transportation will lead folks to make some judgments about you, usually long before they’ve ever actually met you or engaged you in a conversation. We’re all visual creatures, so it makes sense that we rely so strongly on our eyes, but it still bothers me how quickly we formulate and install bias for someone we’ve never even met solely because of what we see. I do this too; I think everyone does.
Getting back to the point here, I’m not at all surprised when I see people dressing up their vehicles, whatever those might be. From racing stripes and tail fins on cars to stickers, extra wide racks and other items plastered onto longboards, I see this sort of thing all the time. Just like in nature, unique designs, flashy colors and interesting patterns catch the eyes of onlookers and demand attention. It makes perfect sense, even if some of the special designs people come up with are pretty gaudy or downright ugly. Having a unique look does not necessarily mean a thing will be pleasing to the eyes as well.
Some people will actually spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars to get their vehicles detailed at a professional shop. Auto detailing can be a pretty profitable career path if you happen to live in a large city with many people, or in a smaller city with a much higher demand for that specific type of automotive work. You could probably work out a nice little side job doing similar stuff to boards, bikes and other modes of transportation, but the profits would be measurably lower consider the significantly lower costs of those transports when compared to a motor vehicle.
I’ve actually thought of doing some designs for vehicles in addition to the work I already do designing clothing. It would be pretty similar. When I see the vast number of different boards available at http://longboardingnation.com/best-longboard-reviews/ and other resources, I think it might actually be even better to work out a business making those stylish. There could be a mailing program where they ship the boards to me, then I apply my designs and ship them back. Or I ship designs which could be ironed into the board or applied another way. I don’t know; it’s pretty interesting stuff if you ask me.
So, have any of you seen interesting designs on vehicles or other modes of transportation lately? I’d actually like to hear more about this from others who have seen more than I have. Of course, I could always just check on a search engine, but that would be pretty boring. I’m always looking for new ways to apply my skills in analyzing and creating designs, and this seems like a pretty good way for me to do it, but one I just haven’t tried yet.
I really enjoy the field of fashion design and coming up with creative new ways to dress men, women and children. But it’s that attention to detail, that eye for the unusual, which has me looking other places for interesting designs as well. I’m talking about things beyond the world of clothing – like exercise equipment, for example. Now I don’t think there’s any way you could make a bunch of metal and weights look appealing, but it’s a fact that different machines have different designs, and some work better than others for users because of these differences in designs.
Sometimes, the simplest designs are the best. If you look at barbells or other hand weights, they work better than most of the expensive equipment you can buy when you just want to do some simple resistance training. They manage to condense a specific amount of weight into an object which is small and manageable. If you’ve ever tried to lift something which wasn’t even that heavy but was simply unwieldy due to its size or dimensions, then you already know that there is a certain ease to lifting simple objects like hand weights. It’s not a design you can really improve upon.
That’s not to say there isn’t exercise equipment which couldn’t be improved with some design adjustments. There are countless power racks and garage gyms gathering dust in people’s homes, unused because of poor design. I’m not going to just blame the machines either – I’m sure some of them go unused simply because whoever bought them changed their mind or didn’t end up using them as much as they thought they might. I’m no engineer, but I do know a few things about design. For instance, more moving parts are usually a bad thing if you can get the same function with fewer.
An ergonomic design is especially important to exercise equipment. While exercising is inherently not a very relaxing activity, the equipment used to do the exercising should be comfortable. It must be designed specifically to avoid injury or undue strain for the user, or at least to reduce the odds of these negative effects occurring when the machine is used. To illustrate this, look at those Shape Ups made by Skechers. They were billed as revolutionary new footwear that was supposed to be perfect for the active person. Because of poor design they injured many users, sometimes permanently.
In this way, designing decent exercise equipment is a lot like designing clothes. Clothing needs to be comfortable for people to wear it – they will simply buy something else is a shirt or slacks don’t fit or are restrictive to the wearer. Furniture, vehicles and many other commodities also need to be built with comfort in mind if the manufacturer expects to turn a profit with their goods. I’m not saying comfort is the most important factor when creating or designing something, but it’s definitely too important to ignore. Cost, durability, resale value and other points all factor into the quality of an item as well.
