Just in time for the holiday gift-giving frenzy, I’ve discovered Barbara Wheeler’s Lush Jewelry collection. This fabulously talented designer has created a delicate and feminine selection that’s ideal for petite frames. And it’s every bit as unique as it is dainty. Because, fortunately for the lucky recipient, most of her pieces are one of a kind. Her design philosophy is all about freedom of expression, rather than mass production, and her customers love her for it.

I was honored to chat with Barbara about Lush Jewelry and what inspired her latest collection.

What are your favorite metals and stones to work with, and why?
I mostly work with 14k gold filled and sterling silver because they are so versatile. I can make something that looks really organic or add some juicy gemstones and make a really luscious, expensive-looking piece. Lately I’ve been obsessing over gunmetal — it has a vintagey appearance that I like to pair with gold for a chic, unique look. I also love rainbow moonstone, labradorite and green amethyst because they’re so clear and almost look wet when they’re high quality.

What inspires your line?
So many things inspire me. Nature, architecture — and not having any earrings to wear today! So, of course, I’ll have to sit down and make a pair of earrings to perfectly complement my outfit and mood. That happens a lot. Sometimes they’re one of a kind and sometimes they make it into my line. But they ALWAYS make me late!

What would you like my readers to know about your line?
So often, my jewelry is described as “delicate,” so whether they choose a three-inch long pair of earrings or small hoops, their petite frames will be accentuated rather than overwhelmed by my jewelry.

Lush Jewelry has graced the pages of ELLE, Pacific, Want, and 944 magazines, and has been used in a number of local fashion shows. A growing number of fashionistas and celebrities alike are taking notice. Petite musician Lily Allen in particular, if you don’t mind the name-drop!

prismera designs jewelry

I admire designs across all types of fashion, but it isn’t often that I actually find inspiration in them. But then I found Prismera Design. Its newest collection, Noctiflora, is inspired by night-blooming botanicals. These nocturnal flowers are absolutely exquisite and seemingly exotic when compared with their day-blooming cousins. And designer Laura Su has a gift for bringing these darlings of nighttime nature to life.

Prismera’s collection includes 33 bold and edgy pieces, each made from sterling silver and stainless steel, an eco-friendly, sustainable material. It’s about time you were introduced to gorjana Jewelry. This collection of fine and fashion jewelry is sold in over 400 boutiques and online, including Henri Bendel, Fred Segal and shopbop.com. Her designs are amazing — I’m in love.

And, lucky for me, I had the opportunity to chat with gorjana about her line.

Tell me about your line. When did you start it?

I had always wanted to start my own business, so I started the line in the summer of 2004. I saw a gap in the jewelry industry for a well-priced, simple, everyday collection that was easy to wear. Our main collection is sterling silver and 14k gold vermeil and we just launched our fine jewelry collection this past fall.

Tell me about your inspiration this season.

Currently, I am getting ready for summer, focusing on statement pieces mixed with turquoise. The combination of the two is so flattering on most everyone, especially after a day in the sun.

What drives your design?

I get a lot of my design ideas just by observing people and their style. I look at what is influencing clothing and wonder what piece of jewelry would make a perfect accessory to an outfit. My goal has always been to stay current, without being too trend focused.

What is your favorite metal or stone to work with and why?

I work predominantly with silver because it is such a versatile metal. It can be worn casual or dressy and goes beautifully with every color palette.

Do you have a favorite piece this season?

I usually obsess over a few pieces every season and wear them constantly. I have two favorites right now, the Poppy Wrap and Bali Grand Bangle. The wrap is a great delicate piece that goes with everything, while the bangle is a great statement piece.

What’s the most popular piece?

Our simple hoops are our most popular pieces season after season. They are just so versatile, and can be worn everyday.

What else would you like my readers to know about your line?

We recently upgraded the e-commerce SHOP section of our Web site. We really wanted to offer our customers a wider selection of our main collection, add our fine jewelry, and simplify the shopping experience.
